Listing an auto as a manual or a manual car as an auto. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! is a manual even though the ad says it’s an auto.
Also NP.

Equal sin

eh, probably worse to list manual as an auto because the enthusiasts would never find the car that might be perfect for them. And the dude who wants an auto will show up for a test drive and be like......?

Listing an automatic as a manual. People who want automatics can’t drive it (or choose not to). However, people like us will pay more for a used manual than anyone would pay for an automatic so you’ll likely to find a deal and scoop it up because you have sharp eyes and know what you’re looking for. Think of it as the world’s least dramatic barn find.

That’s what I was thinking. I’m not sure I’ve seen a manual car listed as an auto before, or at least in recent memory. I was doing some unnecessary car shopping the other day and saw the picture was of an M-Sport so I clicked on the ad and to my surprise it was actually a stick.

It’s a mato. Or maybe an annual.

Listing an auto as a manual is worse. Manuals are an extreme niche these days (in the US) so a misplaced auto will make up a much bigger percentage of search results than a misplaced manual. Plus manual fans already feel like the world is shoving automatics down their throat which adds to the frustration.

Maybe that’s why it’s at this price, seems like a pretty good price for that. I would buy it if I was in the market for one.

So it’s got a Sensonic in it?
![]() 12/21/2016 at 22:04 |

I’d argue it’s worst to list it as an auto when it’s actually a stick.

So many buttons.

I havent seen it either, only auto listed as manual. Usually on craigslist. You can never trust the little specifications bar on the side of a CL post...

One of the reasons it was a pain in the ass to find my M3 was half of the DCT cars are listed as manuals. Find the perfect one and get to the pic of the transmission and it wasn’t a stick. That said, I think it’s worst to list a stick as an auto, because then it gets buried in a sea of two pedaled cars.

Just more things to break!

I think it’s because it defaults to auto, but I forget, it’s been a few months since I made an autotrader ad. I was just so perplexed because some dealers call anything with the ability to “manually shift” a manual.

Speaking of, here’s an article from 1998 I just read about when Saab decided to stop making it.
http://www.autonews.com/article/19980216/ANA/802160766/saab-shelves-sensonic-transmission

Saab considered launching Sensonic with paddle controls, said Axon, but product planners chose a floor shift ‘because paddles would have been an even bigger shock to customers.
That was my favorite part of the article.

It’s worse to list an auto as a manual. Idk about everyone else but for me, I also confirm a manual is a manual in the pics. Someone looking for an auto probably won’t do that and be pissed when they show up to check it out and there’s three pedals.

I think if they list a manual as an auto, for those of us who want a stick it gets lost in a sea of two pedaled cars.

Yeah. Definitely an ‘if they only would have known’ statement.

I guess hindsight is 20/20, but yeah a clutchless transmission seems as far out there as paddles.

But after the first person who shows up to buy see’s it’s a manual, they’ll change it! It’ll be hidden just long enough for YOU to buy, guaranteed!

Also, that could be a good strategy to get some money off. Go and act all pissed off when you see the car is a stick. Be like I can drive stick, but I want an auto, get them to take some money off, buy it for cheaper than an auto.

It could also be a great strategy to get some money off, act all pissed you showed up to drive an auto but it’s really a manual. Then be like yeah I can drive a stick, but I want an auto. Hope they take some money off to get you to buy the car.

Id be interested in trying that, although I feel like theyd probably just wait for the right buyer

Well, if I have a job before this thing sells I might go and try it, but considering my job search hasn’t really been going that well, I doubt it’ll still be there.

I was playing some halo earlier and I think I’m done with video games for the night. I was planning on watching the last two episodes of “the man in the high castle” tonight. You’re “jakley77" right?

Yep that’s me. I usually play BF1 and FH3

Cool, I just added you to my friends. I forgot what your gamertag was and I saw your name the other day and I was like who is this. Normally I’d be down to play, but I want to finish this season before the holidays.

It’s an automobile. That should count for something.

Agreed, pet peeve when sellers try to pass off (usually as if it’s some kind of terrific feature, it seems) DCT, SMG, or even — Lord Help Us — Steptronic as “manual”
Aarrgh! *muttering to self*

I agree it’s annoying. Most dealers list the DCT as a manual, but I guess I’m used to it by now.
![]() 12/22/2016 at 02:48 |

I am accepting DCT listed as manual if the alternative transmission is an actual slushbox or CVT. If the options were manual and DCT, it should be automatic. If the options were manual, DCT, or slushbox, I could see it in either category.

I know when I’m searching for manuals I’ll find some autos in there, but THIS is 10x worse because I don’t search through the thousands of autos.
![]() 12/22/2016 at 10:08 |

There needs to be an option to list the DCT as a separate option.
![]() 12/22/2016 at 10:11 |

Exactly, also I don’t think this is very common. Pretty sure this is the only time I’ve seen an actual manual listed as an auto. If some how you found it and really wanted a manual, could be a great way to try and get a deal or keep it hidden from others who want a manual.
![]() 12/22/2016 at 11:08 |

I saw it twice I can remember while looking for especially rare vehicles before where there are just so few listings it doesn’t take long to go through them (i.e. E91's in any trim / package configuration). It was at a BMW dealer listing on both occasions where I’m guessing the data entry guy is so used to entering automatic for every single listing (at least every sedan and wagon) he or she put it in without even slowing down or thinking otherwise.
Definitely a good way to sneak in for a rare option combo.
![]() 12/22/2016 at 11:20 |

I’ve looked for manual E91s before and it seems 95% of them listed as manuals are autos, well apart from this one . And this one , which you can check the VIN, comes out to be a 6MT.

If I didn’t live in the soul crushing salt wasteland that is Michigan I’d buy one for my daily, mark up be damned. Yet having had one car succumb to the salt already (I went from 9-10k in value to 2500 in 2 years....), I’ve accepted I’ll be buying new or 2-year old CPO’s and selling them every 3-4 years. By the time the GTI lease is done July 2018 it’ll be too late. Maybe if I bought one from the south, but then I’d just feel bad salt crusting the thing for years.

Not sure I could handle those winters. I’ve lived in Georgia, Arizona, and Texas. When I had a second round interview for my first job, they asked me where I wanted to work and what segment I wanted to work in. I told them I wanted to frac in the south. So they put me in Texas.
